MTV is Bringing a Sex Education Show to Egypt

MTV is bringing a safe sex drama that aims to educate youth about sexual behavior to Egypt. MTV Shuga, the network’s original drama on the topic, is currently aired and widely popular across sub-Saharan Africa. Previous seasons of the show have taken place in Kenya and South Africa, with a new season set to be shot next year in Nigeria. The Kenyan first season was one of the Oscar winners, Lupita Nyong’o, first major TV roles.

The show’s Egyptian version, which has yet to have a title, is set to begin airing in 2020. It will be shot in Arabic making it the first version of the show in a language other than English. The Egyptian show will tackle subjects such as contraception, child marriage and female genital mutilation.

Along with Egypt, the network also plans to air a version of the show in India, titled MTV Nishedh, which will tackle issues such as HIV/AIDS and child sexual exploitation.
