Mahatat Brings Opera to Balconies Across Egypt

Returning on 12th – 16th of March for their third instalment of their unique Art of Transit Tour is none other than Mahatat for contemporary art. Bringing classical music and opera to Egyptian streets in cooperation with Teatro Independent Theatre, this one of a kind event is truly something special worth experiencing, as it is very rare to such arts outside the confines of high end performance spaces.

The ‘Opera on a Balcony’ series comes as the latest creative stunt which sees performances on the streets of four governorates; Port Said, Damietta, Mansoura and Al Manial neighbourhood in Cairo. In cooperation with Drosos Foundation and as part of the Access to Art programme, the performances promise to be a unique experience for both passersby and supporters of Mahatat. According to their press release "Pedestrians will be surprised with beautiful music and great performances to whisk them away from their daily chores for a while."

The first ‘Art of Transit’ tour visited the same cities towards the end of 2014, and featured Kousha Puppet Theatre, a troupe known for their use of giant puppets and satire, as well as the Abo Karim marching band. The surprise event was warmly received and was successful in creating a dialogue between artists and the audience on major issues that affect us all.

If you are an opera lover, or new to the genre, this maybe your chance to submerge yourself into the art form without having to pay the typically high tickets prices many pay for fine art.
