After confirmed news on director Mohamed Diab joining the Oscars Jury Committee, The Academy Awards' official website listed Egyptian-American actor Rami Malek as one of the new 774 invited members to join the prestigious academy and vote in the world's most recognised movie awards.

The 2016 Primetime Emmy Award winner, who was born in LA to Egyptian parents, graduated with a fine arts degree in 2003 before embarking on a successful acting career a year later. He has since appeared in critically acclaimed roles, most notably Elliot Alderson on the TV series Mr Robot, which won him the aforementioned award.

The 2017 invitees to join the academy comprise of 57 different nationalities, with 39% being women, including French-Egyptian documentary filmmaker Gihan Al-Tahry, and 30% being people of colour, according to the academy's website. "It’s up to all of us to ensure that new faces and voices are seen and heard, and to take a shot on the next generation the way someone took a shot on each of us," stated the Academy president Cheryl Boone Issacs.
