Short Film Reveals Restoration of Suleiman Pasha Al-Khadim Mosque

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has recently released a short film documenting the five-year renovation of one of Egypt’s oldest Ottoman mosques, Suleiman Pasha Al-Khadim.

Located inside Cairo’s Salah Al-Din’s Citadel, the 2,360-square-metre mosque was constructed in 1528 under the patronage of the Ottoman governor of Egypt, Suleiman Pasha Al-Khadim. Boasting 22 green-tiled domes, pencil-shaped minarets and a minbar inlaid with Iznik tiles, the historic mosque is considered one of Egypt’s earliest examples of Ottoman-style architecture.

The restoration process of Suleiman Pasha Al-Khadim officially commenced in 2018, lasting for five years under the supervision of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities and the military’s Arab Organization for Industrialisation. On September 16th, 2023, the mosque successfully completed its renovation and is now open to the public.
