Breaking: Forensic Expert Fired For Al-Sabbagh Thin Remark

After yesterday's controversial claims by a forensic expert about activist Shaimaa al-Sabbagh's death, news has just broken that he has been fired for his comments...

Staff Writer

Forensic Medicine Spokesperson Hesham Abdel Hamid has been officially sacked following his controversial comments on Egyptian TV stating that activist Shaimaa al-Sabbagh died after being shot by police because she was "too thin".

Shaimaa al-Sabbagh, 31, died from security forces shooting her with close-range bird-shot pellets on the eve of the January 25th revolution anniversary this year. Her death caused widespread uproar, being touted as completely senseless as photos of her last moments made the rounds all across international media.

Adding insult to injury the medical official Hamid was quoted as saying, "She was very thin. She did not have any percentage of fat. So the small pellets penetrated very easily, and four or five out of all the pellets that penetrated her body — these four or five pellets were able to penetrate her heart and lungs, and these are the ones that caused her death.”

He also stated that her colleague, who was also shot, survived because he had a a "layer of fat" which saved him. The yet-to-be-named police officer who shot them has been charged with manslaughter.
