Egyptian Cotton Export Falls by 54.2%

Following a string of inconsistent legislative actions in 2015, Egypt’s cotton industry edges closer to catastrophe, falling by 54.2% during the second quarter of the agricultural season.

Egyptian cotton is facing a crises. According to Daily News Egypt, The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) recently released a statement revealing that exports of the world-renowned Egyptian cotton had fallen by 54.2% this last agricultural quarter.

CAPMAS has since attributed the decrease in exports to an ever-dwindling volume of cotton harvested this year, in addition to the shutdown of a number of spinning factories around the country. In the period since December 2015 to February 2016, cotton exports reached a mere 11,270 kg in comparison to the 24,600 kg reported during the same period last year.
