Egypt's 1st Electric Car Charge Station Just Opened

65 more are being developed.

On Sunday, Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry, Tarek Kabil, oversaw the installation of Egypt’s first electrical car charge station, opening in the Cairo-Suez highway Wataniya gas station, El Ahram Online reports.

The state-owned gas station is also owned by Revolta Egypt, a developer who's already involved in promoting electric charging infrastructure. Revolta Egypt revealed in a statement that this in the first phase of the project, which will oversee the inauguration of 65 more electric car charging stations in seven Egyptian governorates. 

In a move towards the development of the country’s vehicle infrastructure, Kabil condones the implementation electric vehicle technology, elaborating that it is eco-friendly and cost effective. Electric cars are believed to be cost effective and to keep pollution at bay by producing fewer greenhouse gases and having lower fuel cost.

In August 2017, Revolta Egypt announced that four electric car models will be available in the Egyptian market in collaboration with car manufacturing giants the likes of Kia, Nissan and Hyundai.

Working towards sustainable development, Egypt aims to increase the use of renewable energy by 2020, according to Al Ahram Online.

China, U.S and Europe are currently the highest rated countries in terms of electric vehicle sales, and account for 90% of the market. According to the Guardian, the year 2016 saw a rise in the number of electric vehicles worldwide, which rose to two million.
