Egypt LE1 Billion for the Development of Slums
Ministry of Urban Renewal and Informal Settlements vows to develop a total of 258 slums and shanty towns over the next three years.
The Ministry of Planning has announced that LE1 billion out of LE6.85 billion penned for the development programmes will be allocated for the development of slums in Egypt.
If this programme goes to plan and is completed within the three-year time-frame, the Ministry of Urban Renewal and Informal Settlements predicts that 258 urban slums will be completely renovated.
The first stage of “Egypt Without Slums” project is expected to en end by November and will develop 44 slums in Cairo and Giza. Sherif El-Gohary, a technical support manager within the Ministry of Planning said that “Egypt needs between LE200 to 250 billion in order to get rid of the slums and unsafe zones,” Al-Ahram Online.
