Suez Canal Welcomes World’s First Green-Energy Powered Ship

The world’s first seafaring vessel powered by green fuel, owned by Danish shipping conglomerate Maersk, passed through the Suez Canal and was received in the port of East Port Said. The ship is powered by green methanol sourced from Dutch hydrogen products company, OCI Global.

The recent passage through the Suez Canal marks the ship’s point between its port of departure at Ulsan, South Korea and its final destination at Copenhagen, Denmark.

The COP27 UN Climate Change Conference held in Sharm El Sheikh in November 2022 saw the world’s leaders in green hydrogen energy production and the maritime industry sign a statement committing themselves to the realisation of full decarbonisation of the shipping sector by 2050.
