USD 300 Billion Invested in Developing Submarine Cable System in Egypt

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology announced that Egypt has allocated over USD 600 million for the development of its network of internet submarine cables. These investments are expected to generate annual revenues of around USD 250 million.

As of 2016, Egypt was connected to 13 submarine cables, with an additional five under construction. The establishment of the Golden Path, the shortest submarine path spanning 2,650 kilometres, has further bolstered data transfer capabilities between the east and west.

Additionally, 10 cable landing stations will be installed in both the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea to bolster the country's internet infrastructure. These landing stations will accelerate telecommunication signals and provide high-quality internet connectivity across Egypt.

Recently, Telecom Egypt signed an agreement with the Medusa Submarine Cable System to extend the Mediterranean network to the Red Sea by the end of 2025, further enhancing Egypt's connectivity and expanding its reach.

The Egyptian government invested USD 2 billion in digital infrastructure, which resulted in a nine-fold increase in internet speed over the past five years. The number of fixed internet users in Egypt has reached 70 million.
