Egyptian Parliament Wants to Strip Terrorists of their Citizenship

Parliament is really not playing around with terrorists.

Egyptian MPs have recently announced that Parliament would discuss a law that stripping citizenship from anyone involved in acts of terrorism, or participating in an association, organization, gang or any entity that seeks to “harm the public order of the state’’.

In 2015, president Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi ratified a new law that defines terrorists as groups or organizations that “call to undermine laws obstructing the functionality of state institutions, and seek to attack the personal liberty of citizens or harm national unity or social peace.” MP Abdel-Moneim al-Alimi affirmed his support to the draft law, and believes that this will “limit acts of terrorism”.

What about terrorists already behind bars under these charges? Would they be getting away with it? Nope. The Human Rights Committee have announced that the law could be changed in order to initiate a lawsuit against convicted individuals to strip them of their nationality. The proposal of this draft law shows that the government is clearly taking steps to tackle terrorism, after a significant rise in terror attacks since June 2017 by Salafi-jihadist groups in the Sinai Peninsula.
