Who Made it First?

Sampling has become standard for plenty of musicians, but do you know who made it first? Eihab Boraie gives us a lesson in musical history

Staff Writer

The world of music has more thieves than musicians. More often than not, musicians create sounds that are beyond their time and they are quickly dismissed because the masses aren’t ready to accept the new sounds. Don’t get me wrong - not everyone who takes a bit of an existing song and turns into their own, a process called sampling, is a thief but today I highlight a possible musical crime perpetrated by Daft Punk which eventually found its way to Kanye West. But who was the originator? We all hear sounds differently, so why don’t you judge for yourself? Only one of these artists never got their song charted.

Edwin Birdsong - Cola Bottle Baby (1981)

Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (2001)

Kanye West - Stronger (2007)

So, Cairo, tell us what you think. Who did it best and did they transform the sample enough to make it their own or are they just copycats?
