The government is now considering banning the use of Whats App and Viber claiming they have an impact on security and income to the state
"These applications allow subscribers to make free calls, messages and share files while their sources remain unknown. Pre-paid applications will face losses," Badawy Head of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority explained.
A committee is being set up to monitor the actual impact of these apps and decide whether to implement a ban or to throttle the use of them.
It is expected that banning Viber will lead to a drastically lower number of calls from Egyptian tour guides in Sharm calling Russian girls and attempting to get them to move to Egypt. Meanwhile, the Whats App ban is likely to cause a huge impact on the joke forwarding industry.
