The Ministry of Finance is forming a commission to determine how they would establish an electronic system in all air, sea and land ports that will all foreigners to recuperate the cost of value-added taxes (VAT) on all purchases over EGP 1500. The decision was made to encourage more tourists to shop, and will first be implemented in Sharm El Sheikh before the end of 2021.
The new electronic system is part of a larger push to modernise the tax system, which includes proposals to transition to electronic returns and invoices.
