The newly discovered COVID-19 Omicron variant, which was first detected in South Africa, has already spread to Asia and Europe, with confirmed cases found in the UK, Italy, Germany, Belgium, and Hong Kong. As of the time of writing, Egypt has zero confirmed cases of the Omicron variant so far.
Egypt in turn has tightened travel restrictions, suspending all direct flights with South Africa, and placing strict travel restrictions on passengers flying indirectly to Cairo from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Eswatini, Mozambique and Lesotho.
